So you've decided to start a blog, you're doing it as a source of revenue so your first job is to pick a topic. Most people focus immediately on the profitability of the topic - how much do people pay for keywords in AdWords, how much are affiliate programs in that area paying out and so on? I want to discuss how your passion for the topic affects your ability to make money.
The Profitability / Passion Relationship
Let me just say up front that what I advise is that you pick a subject that you are really passionate about. Now by all means do some research to see if this subject is in a profitable niche but let your passion for the subject be more important than the profitability.
Now let me explain my reasons for this advice. Quite simply, for a blog to make money it has to be popular and it has to get traffic. You can only do this with lots of work and with outstanding content. This is by no means an easy task. You really have to work at it and very often it can take a few months before you see any signs of success.
Blogs tend to build slowly, especially at the beginning. It can take months for a blog to really get off the ground and for the traffic to start rolling in. If you've picked a topic that you're not really passionate about then you are likely to run out of steam before you get your blog off the ground.
Now let's think about the money aspect. There are MANY monetization methods but they could broadly be split into two groups. The basic methods consist of mainly 'on-page' methods such as AdSense and similar contextual ads, affiliate marketing, private advertising etc. These are the kinds of ads that do better in a high profit niche but they don't bring in anywhere near as much potential revenue as the second group.
The second group contains more complex techniques such as creating your own products and to do this kind of thing you need to really be able to sell your work and this is another area where your passion needs to come through. If you are blogging about payday loans or mp3 players because you've determined that those topics are highly profitable but you're not passionate about them you will really struggle with any of the advanced monetization strategies.
You might be in a niche that doesn't sound very profitable, such as Rose Gardening for example but if you are really enthusiastic about that niche you'll attract other enthusiasts to your blog, it will be easy to build a genuine relationship with those people and your products will sell much more easily than an affiliate program for example.
In conclusion, there are many ways to profit from your blog but unless you are genuinely interested in your chosen topic you are likely to give up on your blog before it ever develops any real traffic and even if you get that far you'll probably struggle to create your own products and will be limited to minimal earnings from programs like AdSense.
